As a little girl I recall sitting by the huge picture window of her back room with my grandmother, watching the birds flock to various feeders in their back yard. She preferred her little birds..the titmice, nuthatches, chickadees, etc. She’d chase the starlings away as well as the bluejays.
When I was a young married, I loved feeding and watching the birds from my kitchen window. I had a big old apple tree right outside the window, and a table underneath. Feeders hung from the tree branches and more food was on the table.
One year we had an ice storm. The boys were off school for that week, then Christmas week, then a huge snow followed that and after awhile we were all pretty stir crazy.
The birds depended on us so completely during that period, and the boys and I were outside so much, that they became quite tame. ( The birds…not the boys. Little boys are rarely tame! ( smile )
At one point I was able to feed a little chickadee right out of my hand….it came for suet that I was holding. What a magical moment that was.
I recently tweaked my front porch here and set up a feeding area for the birds and squirrels.
The little squirrels are adorable and so funny. Though I was not quite ready to see THIS the other day! He startled me ! I guess he was just “hanging around” .

We watch the birds and squirrels from our office window. I work out of my friend’s home. We even have a hawk and one day he got stuck in her patio and she had to rescue him. It was quite an adventure. The birds do know how to capture our attention don’t they!

Great photos, Debra! My grandmother had purple martin birdhouses. Not sure why she liked them so much. They had a huge garden though so maybe they were beneficial in some way? When I was in high school my brother found an abandoned baby crow. He brought it home and we raised it. You could go outside and call for him and he’d come land on your arm. Best pet ever! Your post took me down memory lane!
We love our critters here, too! I adore your birdie memories, and have so many similar stories. So happy to find another creature fan, and I’m enjoying reading your lovely blog!
Cheers, Andrea
I love your photos. Bird watching is one of mine and my little girls favorite thing to do. Your blog is lovely!
What sweet pictures. I was decorating the front porch the other days and I saw birds feathering their nest!
Have a blessed and wonderful day!

How fun! looks like our place!
Debra, your photos are always amazing. That first one…I could reach out and pet that feathery little head and smell the tangerine section!
I’ve been leaving squirrel treats on the deck in back away from the bird feeder in front…so far everybody’s going where they belong…which is good because I don’t have time to make traffic signs for them!
Too cute Debra! Love all of the sweet pics. The comment about the boys made me laugh. So very true!
Hugs,
Jann
Love these! I didn’t realize birds ate tangerines!
Great photos and I love your story, too! Made me think of all the ice storms and all the birds we fed when I was little. I can remember rescuing a few of them when the ice brought them down from their nests. Nice memories!
magnificent photos ~ the squirrel one is amazing ~ Great shots! ~ (A Creative Harbor) ^_^
I too feed the birds and squirrels. I let the bluejays stay although my mom would chase them off. I like their pretty blue apparel and loud calls. :) Your pictures are amazing and your comments about wild boys is so true!
Wonderful photos! I have happy memories of watching the birds with my grandma. I get my love of birds from her :) SO cool that you got to feed a chickadee out of your hand!
